What Google docs does?

  The Google docs is owned by Google and it is on-line competitor to Microsoft Office 2007. The Google docs is a place where you can import your existing documents, spreadsheets and presentations, or create new ones from scratch. The Google docs could also invite people to your documents and make changes together, at the same time. All you need is a Web browser.

Who might use it?

  Probably everyone would use the Google Docs especially students an teachers because all the documents are hosted online, this also means that you can access your work from any computer anywhere else in the world — but it also means that without the Internet you cannot access your work.

 Teachers could use Google Docs both to publish announcements about upcoming assignments and to monitor student progress via an interactive process which allows you to give guidance when it might be of maximum benefit.

What might it be use for?

  Students could use Google Docs to help them stay organized and keep on top of their assignments. They never have to remember to save their work; it happens automatically. It’s easy to collaborate online with fellow students, even when they aren’t in the same place.

What other serve might serve a similar purpose?

Microsoft’s Office 2007 are quite similar to Google docs as it is on-line competitor to Microsoft Office 2007.

  • · HTML –HTML is stands for Hyper Text Mark-up Language. It is the predominant markup language for web pages.

 

  • · POP-3 – POP3 is stand for Post Office Protocol 3, it is the most recent version of a standard protocol for receiving e-mail. POP3 is a server protocol which e-mail is received and held for you by your Internet server.

 

  • · HTTP- Hypertext Transfer Protocol is an application-level protocol for distributed, collaborative, hypermedia information systems. Its use for retrieving inter-linked resources, led to the establishment of the World Wide Web in 1990 by English physicist Tim Berners-Lee.

 

  • · FTP – File Transfer Protocol is a standard network protocol used to exchange and manipulate files over a TCP/IP based network, such as the Internet.

 

  • · SMTP- Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is an Internet standard for e-mail transmission across Internet Protocol (IP) networks.

 

  • · Hyperlink – Hyperlink is a reference to a document that the reader be able to directly follow.

 

  • · Applet – Applet is a program written in the Java programming language that can be included in an HTML page, much in the same way an image is included in a page

  • The differences between jpeg, .gif, .bmp, and png. 

 

JPEG.- Became popular with the invention of the digital camera. High quality images and huge compression allows for big resolutions but small file sizes. This is the most common image format, especially for photos.

 

GIF. -Is format was created mainly for Internet uses, mainly for its small file size. It’s good for fast-loading web pages only.

 

BMP. – Bitmap is the first type of digital image format. It’s most common in Windows environments. This is generally medium-high quality but produces larger file sizes. This format is ideal for icons and small images.

 

PNG. Portable Networks Graphic, is the best overall image format, especially for computer-generated graphics and files containing text and images having sharp transitions, though it not as good as JPEGs for photos because of the larger file size. PNG is a better choice for storing photos that require a lot of editing, however, since JPEEG is “lossy” and PNG isn’t.

 

  • CSS- Cascading Style Sheets is a style sheet language used to describe the presentation semantics of a document written in a markup language. Its most common application is to style web pages written in HTML and XHTML.

  • XHTML- Extensible Hypertext Markup Language,  is a family of XML markup languages that mirror or extend versions of the widely used Hypertext Markup Language, the language in which web pages are written.

Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia. The name is a portmanteau of the Hawaiian word for quick, “wiki”, and “encyclopedia”. Wikipedia actively updated in over 100 languages.There are 11 other language editions with over 100,000 articles each, and over 50 languages with over 10,000 articles each.

Wikipedia started as nupedia in 2000, it became wikipedia on January 15 2001.

» How does Wikipedia differ from a conventional encyclopedia?

Wikipedia is a conventional encyclopedia because it serves the same goals as the other conventional encyclopedia.

Wikipedia’s is not very reliable because its information isnt as accurate as say a book. People who has a wikipedia accounts are able to edit information or even make things up.

» How good is the Wikipedia entry for your home town?

The page of my hometown on the Wikipedia website is pretty good and detailed as it has the right loctaion, images and information.

» Are there any inaccuracies?

No, not really. it pretty accurate. 

» Could you improve or add to it?

I could imporve wikipedia by having the accurate contents and add more pictures but these would takes forever to get done.

  The scientific magazine “Nature” has compared 42 articles in both the encyclopedia Wikipedia and the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Experts in their field were given the task to check for factual errors. To the surprise of nature, both encyclopedias were containing similar amounts of errors.

» What are the dangers of using Wikipedia as a research source of information?

The danger of using Wikipedia as a research source is information isn’t as accurate as a book because anyone could edited and make things up.

» How can you mitigate against these dangers?

You can mitigate against the danger of inaccurate information by looking for an author and date of the last publish date, make sure the information is accuate.

» What safeguards does Wikipedia have to protect against or correct spurious and inaccurate information?

Safeguards to protect accurate information of Wikipedia is by having a login in system, this meant only people who have a account could edit the information of wikipedia’s website.

» Try creating a Wikipedia account. What happens? Why?

Click on the log- in button/ create an account, then click create one and just type all the information that its need.

» What else can Wikis be used for?

Wikis could be used to create a website of any sort and shares information about the given topic.

No secret, safe shopping?

Hackers can often find out all someone’s personal details about their money, education,work history, family and medical health.Organization required by law to keep this information safe. But good hackers can break into almost any computer system includng those in large orporatino and government.

Some shopping and other websites encorage users to set up ‘ one click buying’. For people who use the same computer and credit card all the time, this is a quick way of shopping. Instead of giving their credit card details every time they want tobuy something, the details are stored on computer.

But the main problem is the internet is not always secure. Someone who set up one click buyomg on a computer in a library on cybercafe may find themselves paying everyone else’s shopping.

Hackers and criminals

People who break into computer system by didging passswords or by other puposes,called hackers.

Many hackers break into disrupt a system or to steal information. Other hackers break into systems for fun. they usually leave coded message ot pictures to show they have been there.

Many people fear that hackers will break into their bank account or take their credit card details from a computer and use them to shops.

Other people miy worry someone could access secret information and use it to blackmail them.

Private detectives no longer just follow people and listen in to their phone calls. They could just pay a hacker to find out all about someone by accessing their computer files also intercepting their email.

The law on your side

Many Countries have laws that protect people from information about them being misused. For example ,in the UK the Data Protection Act states that people who want to store information about others must first register with the Information Commissioner. They have to say what they are going to do with the information, then agree to use it only for the purpose specified and let any person see a copy of the information held on them.  

Which means that schools only allowed to hold information about the useful to them in educating students.

Web toolbar

The Web toolbar allows you to:

  • browse documents on the Web
  • Open documents that have been created fo the WEb in HTML format
  • Jump to other documents using hypertext links

In the Web toolbar there are also favourites button, forward button and back buttons. The favourites button allows you to store web addresses (similar to bookmarkst). Forward and bark buttons could take you from one page to the next providing hypertext links have been created.

What types of sites are on the Web?

There are many and varied of web sites. Many orpanizations have developed web sites and are continually refining their presence on the web.There are many media organizations have developed sites and are providing information which are traditionally published on paper.

Many businesses have developed web sites, these provide a method of communication with news about products and services. Some businesses are developing websites that enable people to order and purchase  goods and services.  This is known as electronic commerce.

The internet today

The growth in use of the internet has been rapid.At the start of the 1990s few people had ever used it,but by the year 2000 about half  of the households in the USA and a third in Britai had a computer with internet access.

Making choices

Not everyone wants to use the internet for everyday tasks. Some people prefer the personal service offer the personal service offered by high street bank, shop or travel agent and objectto the anonymity of the web. They many feel insecure about typing thier details into a computer or unsure about the product they are purchasing. Perhaps they’d rather pay a bit more to get what they want than worry about havinng to search for it online.

What is the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web is know as WWW, it is part of the Internet where information is accessible using software called the browers.Pages of information are accessed using buttons and links that have been embedded in the pages. As the browser software has been developed for a range of differentt computer operating systems, people can use differents types of computers to access the same information.
